If you are experiencing an ear ache, don’t ignore the pain. Chances are, you need the help of an ear, nose and throat specialist such as the staff of South Florida ENT Associates in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines, FL.

Many associate ear aches and ear infections with children because they -- especially young children -- so commonly contract ear Ear Infectionsinfections. But the truth is, ear pain should never be ignored – and anyone at any time of life can get an ear infection.

Usually, an ear infection is a secondary infection – a progression from a cold or sinus infection, for example -- caused by bacteria or a virus in the middle ear. Basically, what happens is that fluid builds up behind the ear drum. This traps bacteria and causes inflammation. Symptoms will usually occur fairly rapidly and can include ear pain, trouble hearing, and/or discharge from the ear.

Although ear infections can be painful, usually they are not serious. However, any infection is a problem that needs to be alleviated as soon as possible. Occasionally ear infections can cause complications. These can range from mild to extremely serious and can include, but are not limited to tearing of the eardrum, loss of hearing, and spread of the infection. In rare instances, an ear infection can progress into meningitis, a potentially fatal condition in which the brain or tissues surrounding the brain become infected and inflamed.

Depending on the cause and severity of your ear infection, your Hollywood and Pembroke Pines ENT may recommend any of a number of treatment options up to and including antibiotics and prescription medications. Be sure to follow your doctor’s directions carefully. If your ENT prescribes antibiotics, be sure to take them all as directed.

If you feel pain in your ear, see some type of discharge, or suddenly have problems hearing, see your ENT as soon as possible.

Remember, do not ignore your pain – pain is your body’s way of letting you know something is wrong and needs to be addressed. For more information contact South Florida ENT Associates in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines, FL at (954) 966-9000.
